Our lemon tree was empty when we left
We were holding in our breath as we moved along the road
On my way out the driveway for the last time I looked back
And I saw the dog run 'round the yard
I almost cried but I was laughing to myself about the neighbor next to us
Who took a bucket and a clipper with her to our tree
The smell of lemon brings it back to me - a symphony of shaking branches and the fruit hitting the ground underneath

Like saying “Goodbye” for the last time?

Like a single flower poking through a chain link wire?

I still can see your feet up on the porch
Stoned and reading articles while the screen catches the flies
I pull my hair back talking about myself, was always talking to myself

The hammock swayed and you laid there till the night fell then got up to pour a glass of gin

How come your eyes only lift into the night?
When the sun goes down you seem happier than when it shines
