'Neath the halo of a street lamp.
在街灯的光晕下方前进
I turned my collar to the cold & damp.
我卷起衣领阻挡潮湿严寒
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light.
当我双眼被一道霓虹光芒刺入
That split the night.
这光芒划破了暗夜
And touched the sound of silence.
并与寂静之声相触
And in the naked night I saw.
深夜之中我看到
Ten thousand people maybe more.
数以万计甚至更多的人
People talking without speaking.
如此多的人道而不言
People hearing without listening.
如此多的人听而不闻
People writing songs that voices never share.
人们正书写着自私自利的乐章
And no one dare.
也没有人敢
Disturb the sound of silence.
打破这份寂静之声
"Fool" said I "U do not know.
“愚人啊”，我说“你们还不懂吗”
"Silence like a cancer grows.
“沉默只如恶疾肆意生长”
"Hear my words that I might teach U.
“有益的教诲你们当听取”
"Take my arms that I might reach U.
“有助的臂膀你们当挽起”
But my words like silent rain-drops fell.
但我的话像雨滴无声坠下
And echoed in the wells of silence.
在一座座沉寂的井中渐渐模糊
And the people bow & prayed.
人们还是盲目地鞠躬祈祷
To the neon God they made.
俯首向自己所造的霓虹之神
And the sign flash out its warning.
告示牌上闪烁着叮嘱告诫
In the words that it was forming.
若隐若现的神谕词句中
And the sign said "The words of the prophets.
上面写着“先知们的箴言
Are written on the subway walls & tenement halls
就涂鸦在地铁大墙及公寓走廊上”
And whispered in the sounds of silence.
并且轻声传送在寂静之声中【先知们的箴言指流浪汉与贫民在墙上涂鸦心中的不满，霓虹之神指现代的人类发明霓虹的照亮黑暗，却又刺了人的双眼，人们追求欲望而对歌者的警醒充耳不闻，最后变成寂静之音】
